DSi elects new President

Down Syndrome International Press Release, Tuesday 9 October 2012:

The Board of Trustees of Down Syndrome International (DSi) is delighted to announce the following appointments elected at DSi's Annual General Meeting at the 11th World Down Syndrome Congress in Cape Town, South Africa on 15 August 2012:

PRESIDENT - Vanessa dos Santos
PRESIDENT ELECT - Rekha Ramachandran

Vanessa will serve as President for a 3 year period from 2012-2015, following which Rekha will become President from 2015-2018.

Vanessa dos Santos is the mother of 3 boys of whom the youngest has both Down syndrome and cerebral palsy. She has been involved with Down Syndrome South Africa (DSSA) since his birth in 1995. Vanessa was appointed as the National Chairperson of DSSA in 2003 and later appointed as the National Director. Vanessa has been a Board member of Down Syndrome International since 2003 and was Chairperson of the Organising Committee of the 11th World Down Syndrome Congress held in Cape Town, South Africa in August 2012.

Rekha Ramachandran is the Co-Founder and Chairperson of the Down's Syndrome Federation of India (Tamilnadu Chapter). Rekha has a daughter with Down syndrome and in her role with the Down's Syndrome Federation of India she has done pioneering work in the field of rehabilitation of children with Down syndrome through Mathru Mandir, Chennai, a day care centre established 25 years ago, and many other initiatives in India and throughout Asia. Rekha has been a Board member of Down Syndrome International since 2009 and is Chairperson of the Organising Committee of the 12th World Down Syndrome Congress to be held in Chennai, India in 2015.
