Special Olympics Trans Tasman Tournament launches today
The Special Olympics 2012 Trans Tasman Tournament starts today in Cairns, and continues until Friday 12th. Our very best wishes to all the 500 athletes - we know there will be many people with Down syndrome amongst them, from both sides of the ditch.
The Tournament will officially begin with a spectacular Opening Ceremony at Barlow Park this evening (6pm). The event will feature all of the traditions of a Special Olympics ceremony, including the parade of athletes, lighting of the cauldron, raising of the flag and the reciting of the oaths.
Athletes will compete in athletics, basketball, football (soccer) and tenpin bowling.
If you are not in Cairns you can follow along via the Tournament website, and/or sign up for daily updates on the games by email.
