Colouring resources 

Following our post about online access to resources for older children and adults who enjoy colouring, readers also recommend:  

A brilliant resource that can be downloaded and coloured in comes from the deviant art blog. There is a wonderful collection and the artists who post are happy for people to download and colour (just not on-sell) and give them credit if posting work on the web. From animals to people, simple to complex. Lovely images like mermaids such as Ariel, ponies, fish and more.

A video 'book' that could be useful for helping to explain death to children and to people with intellectual disability. Thanks to Down Syndrome Victoria for posting this link on their Facebook page recently.

Congratulations to editors Dave Hingsburger and Angie Nethercott on completing the third year of publication of Service, Support and Success (the Direct Support Newsletter), published monthly in Canada by Vita Community Services. It is made freely available online and by subscription (contact details are in every issue). Each issue addresses a single topic. The last few issues from 2014 are now available online, as are all back issues:

A new blog has been launched by the NSW Council for Intellectual Disability.
The first post (2nd December 2014) is  on whether ADHC should close, with the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Down Syndrome Australia Inc – national representation of interests

Down Syndrome Australia Inc was legally incorprated on 1st April as a national organisation representing the interests of people with Down syndrome and their families. Down Syndrome NSW President, Chris Pollock and CEO, Steve Clarke attended the first Down Syndrome Australia board meeting in Melbourne on 4th and 5th May, along with representatives from every Australian state and territory. That meeting was more than 10 years in the making.

Down Syndrome Australia will build strong strategies on its more informal network predecessor’s efforts to advocate strongly for groundbreaking developments such as a National Disability Insurance Scheme and the Better Start initiative.

Angus Graham, Head of Investor Sales at ANZ has been appointed Chairman and Dr Pollock has been appointed Treasurer. Catherine McAlpine, Executive Officer of Down Syndrome Victoria has been appointed part-time CEO of Down Syndrome Australia Inc.

The Summer 1998 - 1999 issue of the Down Syndrome NSW Newsletter had this sunny photo of Lucy Dumitrescu on the cover - it was taken to illustrate a children's book of colours, and was chosen as the cover photo for it too.

And as it happens, this summer, Lucy was again featured in a cover photo, this time for the TAD Journal, January 2010 (the cover story is on p.4), published by Technical Aid for the Disabled, NSW. The accompanying cover story is about Lucy's bike, adapted by the Freedom Wheels program, allowing her to enjoy cycling independently, and to participate in triathlons!

2010 marks 30 years of supporting families for Down Syndrome NSW. The anniversary will be celebrated on several occasions during the year. Keeping Up with Down Syndrome NSW is delving into the archives to see where we've been.

This series of posts will feature the photos from our past Newsletter covers, as an online record, as we move into a new publication - a quarterly magazine produced in collaboration with Down Syndrome Victoria, to be called Voice, as it being developed from their current magazine of the same name. It will comprise a 24 page magazine with content of common interest, and each State will produce its own 8 page supplement specific to its own interests. The first issue of the new Voice is in production now and will be released in March 2010.

We have digital photographic records back to 1998. Prior to that we had bromides prepared on paper for printing, and before that even, we didn't have the resources to print photographs at all. The Newsletter was produced entirely in-house, including printing until 1989 when the printing was first out-sourced.

In our cover photo from the Autumn 1998 issue, twins Jessica and Rebecca were 13. Fast forward to our last NSW-only issue (Summer 2009 - 2010), and there are the twins again, on the occasion of Jessica's wedding in 2009 !
